Picture description:

The historic tableau originated in the ethnic tradition of Ethiopian artists and was painted with natural colours on canvas around 1920 by an unknown artist in Addis Ababa. The painting is 83x124cm and was made as a commisioned work for Hermann Neitzel, a German born journalist and farmer who runs a cotton plantation cooperative in Meta Hara, Eritrea. The picture is titled the “Battle of Segale”, which took place in 1916. This battle was between Rasta Fari, the future Emperor Haile Selassi and Emperor Lij Iyasu who was supported by his father King Michael. Even if it was merely an internal struggle this battle together with the battle of Adwa 1896 strengthened Ethiopias image as a defender of African independence. You can find a similar tableau of the Battle of Adwa made about 1940, coloured in tempera, in the British Museeum in London. Even though the battles happened at different places both paintings use the same pictural figuration in the same landscape. Both paintings could be regarded as an inspiration for Africans around the world and could be seen as a symbol for freedom, not only for Rastas.
