William „Will“ Oldham (* 24. Dezember 1970 in Louisville, Kentucky) ist ein US-amerikanischer Musiker, Songwriter und Schauspieler. Seine Musik wird häufig den Genres Folk und Alternative Country zugeordnet.

Oldham nahm unter verschiedenen Künstlernamen auf, in der Anfangsphase als Palace Brothers (1993/94), Palace Music (1995/96) und Palace (1996). Seit 1999 tritt er durchgehend als Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy auf. Bei seinen Alben sind häufig David Pajo und seine Brüder Ned und Paul Oldham beteiligt. Weitere Bandprojekte, in denen er aktiv ist, sind Amalgamated Sons of Rest, The Anomoanon und Boxhead Ensemble.

Leben

Nachdem Oldham sich zunächst in Hollywood als Schauspieler versucht und sein Studium an der Brown University abgebrochen hatte, kehrte er 1991 nach Kentucky zurück. Fortan widmete er sich der Musik.

Oldham blieb dem Schauspielgeschäft insbesondere im Indenpendentfilm-Bereich verbunden, so etwa so in Junikäfer (2006), der den Zuschauerpreis des Sundance Film Festivals erhielt. Ebenfalls 2006 war er als Hauptdarsteller im Film Old Joy in der Regie von Kelly Reichardt zu sehen, der bei den Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards zum besten Independent-Film 2006 gewählt wurde. In Reichardts Filmdrama Wendy and Lucy (2008) mit Michelle Williams übernahm er eine der Nebenrollen und schrieb die Filmmusik. Zudem spielte Oldham in Edén (2014), A Ghost Story (2017) und mehreren Kurzfilmen mit. Für den Film Elliot, der Drache (2016) steuerte er den Song The Dragon Song bei.

Oldham ist als Partner des Comedian Zach Galifianakis in einer alternativen Version des Videos zu Kanye Wests Single Can’t Tell Me Nothing aus dem Jahr 2007 zu sehen.^[1] Außerdem fotografierte er das Coverfoto des Albums Spiderland von Slint.
