Wiliame Katonivere, 2022

Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere (* 20. April 1964) ist der sechste Präsident der Fidschi-Inseln und seit 2021 im Amt.[1] Er ist Politiker und Unternehmer.[2] 2013 wurde er Gouverneur der Provinz Macuata.[3]

Militärische Karriere

Im Alter von 19 Jahren trat Katonivere 1984 den Royal Fiji Military Forces bei und diente in zwei Einsätzen im Nahen Osten unter den United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon.[4][5] Er stieg in den Rang eines Oberstleutnants auf und diente als kommandierender Offizier des 7. Infanterieregiments.[6][7]

Politische Karriere

Nach einer Karriere beim Militär wurde Katonivere 2013 Gouverneur von Macuata.[3] 2021 kandidierte er als Präsident des Landes und gewann mit knapp 55 % der Stimmen des Parlaments von Fidschi.[8][9]

Präsidentschaft

Während der Corona-Pandemie war er großer Impfbefürworter. Er empfiehlt jedem Fidschianer, sich impfen zu lassen.[10]

Ambassador Marie Damour visited Fiji’s State House to meet with His Excellency the President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere to present her credentials as the United States Ambassador to Fiji.

While at State House, she was also accorded a Guard of Honor by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces. In her meeting with HE President Katonivere, Ambassador Damour emphasized the importance of U.S. and Pacific partnership, and her role to support long standing friendships and alliances in her new role, saying: “As Ambassador, I hope to strengthen the ties between the U.S. and our friends and neighbors in the Pacific. We fought side-by-side in World War II to ensure freedom, and our cooperation continues. Today we work together to ensure regional security, shared prosperity, and resilience against climate change.” She is the Ambassador-designee to the Republics of Kiribati and Nauru, Tuvalu, and the Kingdom of Tonga and looks forward to visiting these countries soon to present her Letter of Credence to the Heads of State.
