WABC (Branding: 77 WABC Radio; Slogan: Breaking News, Stimulating Talk) ist ein US-amerikanischer Talkradio-Sender aus New York City im gleichnamigen US-Bundesstaat. Der Radiosender kooperiert mit ABC News Radio, dem vormaligen Eigentümer des Senders. Heute gehört der WABC Cumulus Media, der Nummer 2 auf dem US-Radiomarkt. Der größte Konkurrent im Segment der traditionellen Talkradio-Stationen auf Mittelwelle ist in New York WOR-AM der iHeartMedia. WABC ist auf der Mittelwelle-Frequenz 770 kHz zu empfangen.

WABCs 50kW-Sendeanlage erreicht großflächig die New York Metropolitan Area und ist in 38 US-Bundesstaaten sowie nachts in großen Teilen Kanadas empfangbar.[1]

Geschichte

Zwei Jahre nach Sendestart im Jahre 1921 zog der seinerzeit noch als WJZ bekannte Sender im Mai 1923 aus einem kleinen Studio in New Jersey in ein größeres im US-Bundesstaat New York um.

Als „Flaggschiff“ der American Broadcasting Company wurde das Rufzeichen des Senders 1953 auf WABC geändert. Mit „The Sound of New York“ (deutsch: Der New Yorker Sound) – im allgemeinen Sprachgebrauch auch „Top 40“ genannt – führte WABC zehn Jahre später ein innovatives Format ein. Der Hörerkreis des Senders vergrößerte sich bis 1976 auf über fünf Millionen Zuhörer wöchentlich.

Am 10. Mai 1982[2] änderte WABC sein Sendeformat vom Musiksender zum Talkradio.

Im Februar 1996 fusionierten WABC und The Walt Disney Company.[1]

Seit 2006 moderiert der konservative Talkradio-Moderator Sean Hannity seine Sendung bei WABC.

Programm

Neben Sean Hannity ist eine der bekanntesten lokalen Talkshows Curtis & Kuby mit dem Bürgermiliz-Gründer Curtis Silva und dem Anwalt Ronald L. Kuby.[3][4]

Antenna town on top of the Empire State Building, with broadcasting antennas for a variety of FM and television stations. Atop is an ERI master antenna. Stations radiating from there include WQXR/105.9, WNYC-FM/93.9, WLTW/106.7, WSKQ/97/9, WXNY/96.3, WWFS/102.7, WRKS/98.7, WBAI/99.5, WBLS/107.5, WWPR/105.1, WHTZ/100.3, WXRK/92.3, WAXQ/104.3 and WKTU/103.5. All are 6kw horizontal and vertical except for WBAI (4.3), WBLS (4.2), WQXR (.61) and WRXP (6.2). It appears from here that WRXP uses the gold one-bay while the rest use the white two-bay above. Next down is a WPLJ/95.5 auxiliary antenna (6.6kw) and then three stations sharing a two-bay panel antenna: WQHT/97.1, WPLJ/95.5 and WCBS-FM/101.1. All three are 6.7kw. The old Alford can be seen below. At the level between the two FM systems is the new master antenna for New York's three TV stations still using the VHF band: WABC-DT on Channel 7, WPIX-DT on Channel 11 and WNET-DT on Channel 13. Unlike most TV stations after the digital transition of 2009, these stations still broadcast on their original analog channels.
