Die Weltmeisterschaft 1977 war die erste, die im Crucible Theatre in Sheffield ausgetragen wurde. Seitdem findet die Weltmeisterschaft immer dort statt. Das Preisgeld für den Gewinner des Turniers, John Spencer betrug 6.000 £. Auch das höchste Break des Turniers wurde durch John Spencer mit 135 Punkten erreicht.
