Die Lage der Sculptor-Gruppe innerhalb der Nachbarschaft der Lokalen Gruppe
Eine der dominierenden Galaxien der Gruppe ist die Sculptor-Galaxie NGC 253
Die Sculptor-Gruppe ist eine Galaxiengruppe im Sternbild Bildhauer (Sculptor) nahe dem Galaktischen Südpol. Mit einer Entfernung von ca. 12 Mio. Lichtjahren (etwa 4 Mpc) ist sie neben der Maffei-Gruppe eine der nächsten Anhäufungen von Galaxien außerhalb der Lokalen Gruppe.
Die Sculptor-Galaxie (NGC 253) und einige andere massereiche Galaxien bilden den gravitationsgebundenen Kern im Zentrum der Gruppe, während andere Galaxien am Rand mit der Gruppe verbunden scheinen, aber nicht gravitationsgebunden sind. In verschiedenen Untergruppen zieht sich die Sculptorgruppe von etwa 2 Mpc (z. B. NGC 55, NGC 300) bis 6 Mpc Entfernung von der Milchstraße hin. Die Zuordnung dieser Untergruppen zur Sculptor-Gruppe kann deshalb variieren.
