Samuel Griswold Goodrich

Samuel Griswold Goodrich (* 19. August 1793 in Ridgefield (Connecticut); † 9. Mai 1860 in New York) war ein amerikanischer Pädagoge und Schriftsteller, besser bekannt war er unter seinem Pseudonym 'Peter Parley'.

Goodrich widmete sich dem Buchhandel und ließ sich, nachdem er 1824 Europa besucht hatte, in Boston nieder, wo er 1828–42 das illustrierte Jahrbuch The Token herausgab, für das er selbst eine große Anzahl Gedichte und Erzählungen schrieb.

Seine weitverbreitete Peter Parley Series of Juvenile Books füllt 177 Bände. Außerdem schrieb er:

• Fireside Education (1838);
• The Outcast, and other Poems (1841);
• Sketches from a Student's Window (1841);
• A Winter Wreath of Summer Flowers (1854);
• Recollections of a Lifetime (1857, 2 Bde.; neue Ausg. 1880) und
• Illustrated Natural History of the Animal Kingdom (1859, 2 Bde.).

Unter dem Präsidenten Millard Fillmore bekleidete Goodrich 1851 den Konsulatsposten in Paris. Er starb am 9. Mai 1860. Seine Autobiographie (Story of my own Life) gab Freeman 1862 heraus.
