Das Ranji Stadium (bengalischরঞ্জি স্টেডিয়াম), auch als Eden Gardens (bengalischইডেন গার্ডেন্স) bekannt, befindet sich in den Eden Gardens in Kalkutta und ist das älteste Cricket-Stadion in Indien. Es ist die Spielstätte des Bengal Cricket Teams und bietet nach Renovierungsarbeiten für den Cricket World Cup 2011 insgesamt 66.349 Zuschauern Platz.[1] Nach dem Yuba Bharati Krirangan ist es das zweitgrößte Stadion in Indien.
Kapazität und Infrastruktur
Das Stadion hatte bis zu den Renovierungsarbeiten bis zum Jahr 2011 eine geschätzte Kapazität von ca. 96.000 Plätzen. Diese wurden jedoch deutlich reduziert, um die Vorgaben des International Cricket Council zur Austragung des World Cups 2011 zu erfüllen.[2] Diese Renovierungsarbeiten waren vom Zeitplan her umstritten und führten dazu, dass das Spiel zwischen Indien und England beim Turnier verlegt wurde.[3] Die anderen Spiele konnten jedoch gesichert werden.[4]
Internationales Cricket
Das erste Testspiel, das in den Eden Gardens ausgetragen wurde, fand im Januar 1934 zwischen Indien und England statt. Seitdem fungierte es regelmäßig für Tests, ODIs und Twenty20 als Heimstadion der Indischen Nationalmannschaft. Des Weiteren wurde es für ein Vorrundenspiel und das Finale des Cricket World Cup 1987, ein Halbfinale beim Cricket World Cup 1996 und für drei Vorrundenspiele beim Cricket World Cup 2011 genutzt. Ebenso wurden hier Partien bei der ICC World Twenty20 2016 und der parallelen ICC Women’s World Twenty20 2016 ausgetragen und auch beim Cricket World Cup 2023 werden in dem Stadion Spiele stattfinden.
Verwendung in der IPL
In der Indian Premier League wird das Stadion von den Kolkata Knight Riders als Heimstadion genutzt.

The Eden Gardens stadium just before the beginning of the Indian Premier League match between the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Chennai Super Kings, on the 18th of May, 2008.
Knight Riders captain Saurav Ganguly won the toss and decided to bat first, much to the jubilation of the some 80000-strong crowd. But as has been the trend of the Knight Riders in this inaugural IPL tournament, the batting failed to fire once again. Only Salman Butt gave something to cheer in his 54-ball-73 as the Knights managed an under-par 149/5 in their 20 overs.
The crowd hoped of some repetition of the fiery bowling of Shoaib Akhtar that had sent the Delhi Daredevils packing in the last match at Eden. But nothing such happened and the Super Kings were cruising happily along when the Nor-Westers accompanied by thundershowers came and put an end to the game. The dropped catch of Parthiv Patel by Ashok Dinda off Ajit Agarkar finally turned out to be the decisive factor as the Super Kings won the match by 3 runs in the Duckworth-Lewis method.
In the end, it was a dejected walk back home for the ever-enthusiastic crowd as their team lost out yet again in a close match and are now virtually out of contention for the semifinals of IPL '08.
Still Eden Gardens rocks, and we are proud of the best stadium in India and one of the best in the world.
