The mine was a challenge to my preconceptions.
In Kailo they mine wolframite and casserite. Before the war the mines were operated by a state run company, the defunct infrastructure can be glimpsed under bushes and vines. The company still has a smart office in the centre of the village, but instead of mining they take a percentage of the proceeds of the artisan miners and the traders. Most of the workers are from the area, although I met some from the province of Kasai.
Children were working with their parents, helping with panning for the ore, carrying and selling goods to the workers. The mine is made up of widely dispersed open pits. Most pits were 4 to 10 metres deep with the occasional 25 metre pit. Next to the pits were the temporary huts of the workers. There did not appear to be the squalor or disease that we find in gold mines. Although there were maison de tolerance as they are politely called here with the associated risks of sexual diseases, AIDS and child prostitution.

A USAID-supported training session for teachers in Mbandaka, northern DRC. In FY 2017, USAID trained over 15,000 teachers in Grades 1-4 to promote evidence-based early grade reading instruction.
The focus of training included the use of reading instruction materials developed for Grades 1 and 2 in three national languages and oral French, and for both formal and non-formal schools. Teachers in Grades 3 and 4 were trained to use supplemental instructional resources to improve reading instruction in their classrooms. Photo credit Julie Polumbo

Members of the community farming group at work in their community fields near the town of Masi Manimba, Bandundu Province, DRC. Since receiving some training on healthier eating and nutrition from the NGO Action Against Hunger, the community organised itself into voluntary groups and came up with the idea for a co-operative farm. It now produces enough food to feed the 35 families in the community whilst still leaving them enough to sell at the local market.
Background
UK aid has supported the government of DRC and aid agencies including Action Against Hunger to provide emergency nutrition response programmes across DRC in 2010 and 2011. In some areas, the communities have taken some of the ideas that Action Against Hunger brought to them, and organised themselves to tackle malnutrition from the ground up - by forming their own co-operative farms and self-support groups.

A mask from the Kuba Kingdom. Kuba mythology revolves around three figures, each represented by a masquerade character: Woot, the creator and founder of the ruling dynasty; Woot’s spouse; and Bwoom. Bwoom’s specific identity varies according to different versions of the myth. He may represent the king’s younger brother, a person of Twa descent, or a commoner. Embodying a subversive force within the royal court, the Bwoom masquerade is often performed in conflict with the masked figure representing Woot.

Formation, Recherche, et Environnement dans la Tshopo (FORETS), Democratic Republic of Congo - Emanuel Balisa Akangi, 40 years, hunting in the forest, Yangambi, DRC. The main animals that are hunted are warthogs, monkeys and Gambia rats. Forests have plenty of animals although in decline compared to 10 years ago. Hunters set up up to 20 traps in one morning and go back to check after two or three days. Warthogs and Gambia rats are generally caught with the traps and monkeys taken down with a rifle. There are four month in a year (from Aurgust to November) in which it is forbidden to sell bush meat. Photo by Axel Fassio/CIFOR

Dungu in the far north of the Democratic Republic of Congo borders on the Central African Republic and the south of Sudan. There are no government troops there since the local people asked them to leave two years ago. The infamous Lords Resistance Army is in the area, they crisscross the notional borders in the area attacking villages, kidnapping looting and killing. I was there to see what UNICEF needs to do to help. We stayed in sleepy Dungu meeting with local authorities and peace keepers.
In the early mornings I managed to make some time to visit. Dungu is pretty much cut off from the rest of the Congo, in the dry season it takes three to five weeks by truck from the nearest town, longer in the wet season. A small plane or two run by NGOs or missionaries come by in the week.
The town itself is collection of huts under the mango trees strung out along a river. As in many such areas mud huts rub up against crumbling colonial brickwork interspersed with electricity pylons that have long since lost their cables.

Revenue from mineral exports makes up a large portion of the Democratic Republic of Congo's economy. While Congo is very rich in mineral resources, these deposits require extensive manual labor to extract, often under life-threatening conditions. Mining of cobalt is tied to human rights abuses, such as unsafe worksites, child labor, and forced Congolese labor, in addition to environmental degradation.
