Oscar Traynor 1922 in Dublin

Oscar Traynor (irisch Oscar Mac Thréinfhir, * 21. März 1886 in Dublin; † 15. Dezember 1963 ebenda) war ein irischer Politiker.

Er wurde Mitglied der Irish Volunteers und nahm 1916 am Osteraufstand in Dublin teil. Nach dessen Zerschlagung wurde er von der britischen Regierung in Wales, Großbritannien, interniert. Im Irischen Unabhängigkeitskrieg von 1919 bis 1921 war Oscar Traynor Kommandant der Dublin Brigade der Irisch-republikanischen Armee (IRA).

1925 wurde er für die Sinn Féin in den Dáil Éireann, das Unterhaus des irischen Parlaments, gewählt, nahm sein dortiges Mandat gemäß der Politik seiner Partei jedoch nicht wahr. Dies änderte sich erst 1932, als Traynor für die Fianna Fáil in den Dáil Éireann gewählt wurde. Von 1936 bis 1939 war er Minister for Posts and Telegraphs; er diente in späteren Regierungen zwischen 1939 und 1948 sowie von 1951 bis 1954 als Verteidigungsminister. 1948 wurde er Präsident der Football Association of Ireland. Von 1957 bis 1961 war er Justizminister.

We were originally fairly sure this photo was taken on Monday, 10 July 1922, but wanted to know a lot more about it than we did. If correctly dated, this would have been taken 5 days after Oscar Traynor's anti-Treaty fighters had been defeated around O'Connell Street in Dublin, and 17 days before he was arrested and imprisoned in Gormanston Camp... We asked if any of you could help and there was a huge effort put into correctly dating this photo.

Thanks to everyone involved, but ultimately, we have to thank Siulach who commented: "According to the Irish Independent, April 3, 1922, the Dublin City Brigade I.R.A. paraded at Smithfield on the 2nd "under officers who recognise the Executive established as a result of the recent Convention", and were addressed by Oscar Traynor, Rory O'Connor and F[rank] Henderson."

The dating of this photo is particularly useful to us, because it allows us to accurately date other W.D. Hogan photos taken at this spot on Sunday, 2 April 1922! And also allows us add the Holy Trinity of tags: Location Identified; People Identified; Date Established...
