Eröffnungsfeier bei den Olympischen Spielen in London
Der 400-Meter-Lauf der Männer bei den Olympischen Spielen 1948 in London wurde am 4. und 5. August 1948 im Wembley-Stadion ausgetragen. 53 Athleten nahmen teil.
Olympiasieger wurde der Jamaikaner Arthur Wint vor seinem Landsmann Herb McKenley. Bronze gewann Mal Whitfield aus den USA.

Durchführung des Wettbewerbs
Die Athleten traten am 4. August zu den Vorläufen an. Insgesamt wurden zwölf Läufe absolviert. Die jeweils zwei besten Läufer – hellblau unterlegt – qualifizierten sich für das Viertelfinale am selben Tag, in dem sich die jeweils drei besten Teilnehmer – wiederum hellblau unterlegt – für das Halbfinale qualifizierten. Die beiden Halbfinals und das Finale wurden am 5. August durchgeführt. In den Halbfinals konnten sich die ersten drei Starter – hellblau unterlegt – für das Finale qualifizieren.

Als Topfavorit galt Weltrekordler Herb McKenley aus Jamaika. Sein Landsmann Arthur Wint und der US-Läufer Mal Whitfield, Sieger über 800 Meter, zählten zu den Medaillenkandidaten. Im Finale legte McKenley von Beginn an ein hohes Tempo vor und führte nach zweihundert Metern mit knapp sieben Metern Vorsprung. In der letzten Kurve verlor er jedoch an Geschwindigkeit, die Londoner Luft mit ihrem Smog machte ihm zu schaffen. Zwanzig Meter vor dem Ziel wurde er von Wint überholt, der schon seit ein paar Jahren in London lebte und die Luftverhältnisse kannte.[4]
Arthur Wints Sieg war der erste Olympiasieg eines jamaikanischen Sportlers bei Olympischen Spielen.

Carl Rune Larsson of Sweden (b.1924) winning a 400 metres hurdles heat. He went on to win bronze in the event finals and also ran with Kurt Lundquist, Lars Wolfbrandt and Folke Alvevik in the 4x400 metres relay where the Swedes won bronze. Daily Herald Archive at the National Media Museum

Arthur Wint recorded an Olympic record for the 400 metres in 1948 and was the first Jamaican to win an Olympic gold. Wint was known as "the Gentle Giant". In 1942 he joined the British Common Wealth Air Training Plan and was sent to Britain for active combat during World War II. He left the RAF in 1947 to attend St Bartholomew's Hospital as a medical student before returning to his homeland as a doctor. Daily Herald Archive at the National Media Museum

Mal Whitfield (b. 1924) won Gold in the 800m event and in the 4x400m relay at the 1948 Olympics. "Marvelous" Mal served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was the first black athlete to win the James E. Sullivan Award in 1954 for outstanding amateur athletics. Whitfield trained numerous athletes over the years and arranged sports scholarships for over 5,000 African athletes to study in the US.
