Irland, dessen NOK, die Olympic Federation of Ireland (irisch Cónaidhm Oilimpeach na hÉireann) 1922 als Irish Olympic Council gegründet und vom IOC anerkannt wurde, nimmt seit 1924 an Olympischen Sommerspielen teil. Seit 1992 werden auch Sportler zu Winterspielen entsandt.
Geschichte
Irland war selbst noch kein Ausrichter von Olympischen Sommer- oder Winterspielen. Insgesamt traten 744 Athleten, unter ihnen 135 Frauen, an. Sportler aus Irland konnten bislang 31 Medaillen gewinnen, alle davon bei Sommerspielen. Erfolgreichste Athletin ist die Schwimmerin Michelle Smith, die zwischen 1988 und 1996 insgesamt dreimal Gold und einmal Bronze gewann. Erster Medaillengewinner war der Künstler Oliver St. John Gogarty, der sich bei den Kunstwettbewerben 1924 Bronze sicherte.
Jüngstes Mitglied einer Mannschaft aus Irland war bei den Sommerspielen 1972 in München die Schwimmerin Aisling O’Leary, die im Alter von 15 Jahren an den Start ging. Der Segler Joe McMenamin war ebenfalls 1972 mit 59 Jahren der älteste Teilnehmer in der irischen Olympiageschichte.
Paddy Carroll trug als einziger Ire zweimal die Flagge Irlands bei einer olympischen Eröffnungsfeier.
Politik
Das NOK Irlands repräsentiert die komplette irische Insel. So führt man auch Nordirland, welches zum Vereinigten Königreich gehört, mit unter der Bezeichnung Irland.[1] Man schlug zwischenzeitlich eine spezielle olympische Flagge für die Insel vor. Das NOK benannte sich 1952, um dies zu verdeutlichen, daher auch von Irish Olympic Council in Olympic Council of Ireland um.
