NGC 2865 ist eine elliptische Galaxie vom Hubble-Typ E3 im Sternbild Wasserschlange südlich der Ekliptik. Sie ist schätzungsweise 108 Millionen Lichtjahre von der Milchstraße entfernt und hat einen Durchmesser von etwa 80.000 Lj.

Das Objekt wurde am 23. Januar 1835 von dem Astronomen John Herschel mit einem 48-cm-Teleskop entdeckt.[4]

NGC 2865 is a big and dainty elliptical shell galaxy.


Full disclosure: I had to clone data to fill in most of the chip gap except for some data which was available near the core of the galaxy. If necessary I can easily supply an image sans cloned data but the chip gap is really distracting. I think my method of taking the data from the two sides of the gap and copying it over is a fairly accurate way to estimate what the galaxy looks like in the gap. It just averages the two sides together by partially blending one on top of the other.
