Die 17. Mille Miglia, auch Mille Miglia, Brescia–Roma–Brescia, fand am 23. und 24. April 1950 statt und führte über 1.645 km von Brescia nach Rom und wieder zurück nach Brescia.

Brescia – Verona – Venedig – Padua – Rovigo – Ferrara – Ravenna – Forlì – Rimini – Pesaro – L’Aquila – Rieti – Terni – Rom – Civitavecchia – Grosseto – Livorno – Pisa – Florenz – Futapass – Raticosapass – Bologna – Modena – Reggio nell’Emilia – Parma – Piacenza – Cremona – Brescia
Schwere Unfälle
Nach der Unterbrechung durch den Zweiten Weltkrieg und der Wiedereinführung 1948 hatten die Organisatoren 1949 die Mille Miglia mehr oder weniger zum offenen Rennen erklärt. Grundsätzlich musste zwar jeder Starter entweder eine internationale oder eine nationale italienische Fahrerlizenz vorweisen, um an der Veranstaltung teilnehmen zu können. Die Veranstalter gaben aber auch Lizenzen mit der Anmeldung am Rennen aus. Dadurch wurde die Gruppe der Starter, die ohne jedwede Rennerfahrung mit ihren Straßenfahrzeugen an den Start gingen, immer größer. Die Folge waren viele Unfälle, von denen drei fatal endeten. Als möglicher Teilnehmer konnte man eine Startnummer lösen, ohne Fahrer und Fahrzeug anzugeben; daraus folgte die Anzahl an Rekordmeldungen von 487. 378 Teams gingen letztlich ins Rennen; auch das war ein Rekordwert.
Nur zwei Kilometer von seinem Heimatort Calcinato entfernt verunglückte Aldo Bassi knapp 15 Minuten nach dem Start tödlich. Bassi teilte sich das Cockpit eines Ferrari 166MM Barchetta Touring mit Aldo Berardi. In der Nähe von Lonato del Garda geriet der Ferrari von der Fahrbahn ab und prallte gegen einen Baum. Beide Fahrer wurden dabei schwer verletzt. Während Bassi wenig später in einem Krankenhaus in Brescia seinen schweren Verletzungen erlag, überlebte Berardi den Unfall.[1] Antonio Torta, der Beifahrer von Egidio Salvati, starb ebenfalls an den Folgen eines Unfalls. Nach einem Unfall des Fiat, in dem Salvati am Steuer saß, wurden beide Fahrer mit Verletzungen in ein Spital gebracht. Drei Tage nach dem Rennen erlag Torta seinen schweren Kopfverletzungen.[2]
Der dritte Todesfall betraf den 1912 in Beaconsfield geborenen Engländer Peter Monkhouse. Nur eine halbe Stunde nach dem Unfall von Bassi und Berardi verunglückte der Healey Silverstone, der zu diesem Zeitpunkt von P. A. H. Wood gefahren wurde. Der Unfall ereignete sich auf der Landstraße zwischen Vicenza und Padua an derselben Stelle, an der schon wenige Minuten zuvor der italienische Prinz Raimondo Lanza di Trabia bei einem Zwischenfall verletzt wurde. Monkhouse starb wie Torta an Kopf- und Nackenverletzungen[3].
Teams und Fahrer
Nach der Rückkehr von Gioacchino Colombo zu Alfa Romeo übernahm Aurelio Lampredi bei der Scuderia Ferrari auch die Arbeit an den Rennmotoren der Sportwagen. Der V12-Motor, der in den unterschiedlichen 195-Renntypen zum Einsatz kam, leistete 180 PS (132 kW) bei 7000/min. Eine Einmaligkeit war der Start der vier Marzotto-Brüder für die Marke Ferrari, zwei davon für die Werksmannschaft und zwei für die private Scuderia Marzotto. Gianni Marzotto und Vittorio Marzotto fuhren Werkswagen; Paolo Marzotto und Umberto Marzotto für das familieneigene Team. Gianni ging mit dem Ferrari 195 Sport Touring Berlinetta Le Mans, Vittorio mit einem Ferrari 195S Barchetta Touring ins Rennen. Die Scuderia Marzotto meldete zwei 166MM Barchetta Touring. Einen weiteren 195S des Werksteams ging an Dorino Serafini. Ein spezielles Projekt war der Ferrari 275S. In ein 195S-Fahrgestell wurde ein auf 4,1 Liter Hubraum erweiterter 12-Zylinder-Motor eingebaut. Die Berlinetta-Karosserie kam von Touring. Pilotiert wurden die beiden 275S von Alberto Ascari und Luigi Villoresi.
Großer Gegner der Scuderia war Alfa Romeo. Das Mailänder Unternehmen war Ende der 1940er-Jahre wieder werksseitig in den Motorsport zurückgekehrt und dominierte 1950 die Formel-1-Rennen. Zur Mille Miglia kam Alfa Romeo mit vier unterschiedlich motorisierten Fahrzeugen, die von Juan Manuel Fangio, Franco Rol, Consalvo Sanesi und Felice Bonetto gefahren wurden.
Der Rennverlauf
Der strömende Regen, der mit dem Start des ersten Fahrzeugs in Brescia einsetzte, bevorteilte geschlossene Fahrzeuge. Gianni Marzotto siegte mit einem Vorsprung von knapp fünf Minuten auf seinen Teamkollegen Dorino Serafini. Dritter wurde Juan Manuel Fangio im Werks-Alfa-Romeo. Bemerkenswert ist auch der Sieg der Italienerin Giovanna Maria Cornaggia Medici in der Rennklasse für Tourenwagen über 1,1-Liter-Hubraum.
