Die Military Academy Cadet Chapel in West Point (New York) ist ein protestantisches Kirchengebäude für die United States Military Academy. Sie beinhaltet die nach der Anzahl der Pfeifenreihen größte Orgel der Welt in einem religiösen Gebäude.
Geschichte
Die Cadet Chapel wurde aus Granit im neogotischen Stil von Cram, Goodhue and Ferguson erbaut und am 12. Juni 1910 fertiggestellt.
Die Glasfenster wurden von Willet Studios (Philadelphia) gestaltet. Das große Fenster im Altarraum ist mit dem Leitspruch der Academy „Duty, Honor, Country“ (dt. „Pflicht, Ehre, Vaterland“) beschriftet. Die restlichen Fenster wurden von verschiedenen Absolventenjahrgängen gestiftet.
Orgeln
Altarraum mit Hauptspieltisch
In der Cadet Chapel befindet sich die größte Orgel in einem Kirchenraum, die zugleich die drittgrößte Orgel der Welt ist – nach der Orgel der Atlantic City Convention Hall und der Orgel des Wanamaker Department Stores. Sie geht in ihren Ursprüngen zurück auf eine Orgel, die der dänisch-amerikanische Orgelbauer Mathias P. Möller 1911 als Opus 1200 mit 40 Registern auf drei Manualen und Pedal erbaut hatte.[1]
Aufgrund der großen Spendenbereitschaft der meist ehemaligen amerikanischen Soldaten, von denen viele in der Military Academy in West Point ausgebildet worden waren, konnte die Orgel ständig erweitert werden. Die Umbauten beruhten zunächst auf Entwürfen von Frederick C. Mayer, des ersten Organisten der Orgel, und seines engen Freundes George Ashdown Audsley:[2]
- 1913: erste kleinere Erweiterung
- 1920: neuer viermanualiger Spieltisch von Mayland & Son, und Erweiterung auf 57 Register durch Möller[3]
- 1923: Einbau der Orchestral division (24 Register) durch Möller (insgesamt 81 Register)
- 1927: Hinzufügung der Viol division (12 Register) durch Möller (insgesamt 93 Register)
- 1930: Ergänzung um die Harmonic division (72 Register) mit Pfeifenwerk von Charles Mutin und Bonavia-Hunt durch Möller (jetzt insgesamt 165 Register)
- 1940: weitere Ergänzungen durch Möller
- 1950: Einbau einer Bombarde 32‘ durch Aeolian-Skinner[4], Aufstellung eines neuen Spieltisches (jetzt 213 Register) durch Möller[5]
- 1970: Ergänzung um ein drittes Hauptwerk mit Pfeifen der niederländischen Firma Stinkens
- 1974: Einbau der Transept organ mit Pfeifen von Gustav S. Bier (Giengen an der Brenz)
- 1980: Hinzufügung einer Trompette en Chamade
- bis 2004: weiterer Ausbau auf 291 Register[6]
- bis 2015: Erweiterungen durch Grant Chapman
Das Instrument wird auch heute noch erweitert.
Die Orgelanlage hat derzeit insgesamt 304 Register, hinzu kommen 297 Transmissionen und Extensionen. Sie verfügt über 380 Pfeifenreihen mit ca. 23.500 Pfeifen und ist auf mehrere Standorte verteilt: Querhaus (Transept Organ), Seitenemporen (Left Chamber Organ, Right Chamber Organ) und Langhaus (rechts: Echo Organ; links: Nave Organ).[7] Die Anlage verfügt über etliche „floating divisions“, das sind Manualwerke, die keinem bestimmten Manual zugeordnet sind. Diese „Divisions“ (u. a. die „Orchestral division“, die „Viol division“) finden sich insbesondere in den beiden Chamber Organs.
Das Instrument wird von einem viermanualigen Spieltisch aus angespielt, der im Chorraum aufgestellt ist. Die Registerwippen sind links und rechts des Spieltisches in 10 übereinander liegenden Reihen angeordnet.[8]
