Liste strahlgetriebener Kampfflugzeuge

Developed from the Su-9 with a larger nose to accommodate more powerful radar and engine, the Su-11 was immediately outclassed by types like the Su-15, and only 108 were built. Amazingly, having entered service in 1964, the final aircraft weren't withdrawn until 1983! Sadly, only two now exist, the other one currently being stored at the former museum in Khodynka, Moscow. This example was previously coded '15 green'. c/n 0115307. On display at the Russian Air Force Museum. Monino, Russia.

The Boeing X-32, left, and the Lockheed X-35 competed for the DoD contract to produce the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) in 1997. Both companies received $750 million grants to build prototypes. The new single-engine, Mach-1 capable aircraft needed to be stealthy and provide robust situational awareness to the pilot during attacks on ground targets and when fighting in air-to-air engagements. It also needed to meet the specifications of the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps as well as nation partners. Lockheed won the competition which would eventually produce the F-35 Lightning II. (photo / Boeing)

A-5 Vigilante ECN-231.jpg
A North American Aviation A3J-1 Vigilante (Navy serial number 147858/NASA tail number 858) arrived from the Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River (Maryland, USA), on 19 December 1962 at the NASA Flight Research Center (now Armstrong Flight Research Center, Edwards, California). The Center flew the A3J-1 in a year-long series of flights in support of the U.S. supersonic transport program. The Center flew the aircraft to determine the let-down and approach conditions of a supersonic transport flying into a dense air traffic network. These flights followed two flight plans that were based upon earlier NASA Flight Research Center studies, one for a variable-sweep wing configuration and the other for a delta-wing configuration. NASA Flight Research Center test pilot William H. Dana made approximately 21 flights along federal airways that entered Los Angeles. With the completion of the research flights, the Center sent the A3J-1 back to the Navy on 20 December 1963.

The Tu-128 was a twin-engined supersonic interceptor with a maximum speed of nearly 1,200mph. It first flew in 1961 and the type was finally retired in 1990. It competed against the La-250, an example of which is also on display at Monino. Although generally referred to by the Tupolev designation of Tu-128, it's Soviet Air Force designation was actually 'Tu-28'. A total of 198 were built and it was given the NATO codename 'Fiddler'. This is the prototype aircraft and was originally coded '0 black' before being given a red bort code (like many other aircraft at Monino!). c/n 71281. Russian Air Force Museum. Monino, Russia.

Aero L-29 Delfín (14062119125).jpg
Autor/Urheber: Bernard Spragg. NZ from Christchurch, New Zealand, Lizenz: CC0

In the late 1950s, the Soviet Air Force was seeking a jet-powered replacement for its fleet of piston-engined trainers, and this requirement was soon broadened to finding a trainer aircraft that could be adopted in common by Eastern Bloc air forces. Aero's response, the prototype XL-29 designed by Z. Rublič and K. Tomáš first flew on 5 April 1959, powered by a British Bristol Siddeley Viper engine. The second prototype was powered by the Czech-designed M701 engine, which was used in all subsequent aircraft.

The basic design concept was to produce a straightforward, easy-to-build and operate aircraft. Simplicity and ruggedness were stressed with manual flight controls, large flaps and the incorporation of perforated airbrakes on the fuselage sides providing stable and docile flight characteristics, leading to an enviable safety record for the type. The sturdy L-29 was able to operate from grass, sand or unprepared fields. Both student pilot and instructor had ejection seats, and were positioned in tandem, under separate canopies with a slightly raised instructor position.

In 1961, the L-29 was evaluated against the PZL TS-11 Iskra and Yakovlev Yak-30 and emerged the winner. Poland chose to pursue the development of the TS-11 Iskra anyway, but all other Warsaw Pact countries adopted the Delfin under the agreements of COMECON.

Production began April 1963 and continued for 11 years, with 3,600 eventually built until 1974. A dedicated, single-seat, aerobatic version was developed as the L-29A Akrobat. A reconnaissance version with nose-mounted cameras was built as the L-29R.
