Afternoon departure for Lubsko (Somerfeld) . I hadn't meant to come to Zary, but the appearance of a steam train for Lubsko at Zagan caused a change of plan. Time constraints meant I had to jump off at Zary as a return to Legnica from Lubsko would have been impossible. At this time, railway photography was illegal, so this photo was a bit risky,especially with railway personnel on the platform.

PKP Class Ol49 2-6-2 No.Ol49-85 dumped in Wolsztyn yard, 18 November 2017. The Ol49 Class were a Polish development of the Russian Class Su 116 were built (Including 4 for North Korea) in 1951-54 by Fablok of Chrzanow. The class introduced a new type of boiler-mounted smoke deflector peculiar to Poland. They had 40 sq ft grate, 5'9" driving wheels, 19.6" x 25" cylinders, 227 psi boiler pressure and weighed 82 tons.

During 1991 I was lucky enough to be assigned Poland as a Sales Territory by my employer at that time, Philips Scientific, in Cambridge. Travelling around that great country I was able to make two visits to the operational steam locomotive depot at Wolsztyn during 1991 and on Poland's National Day - 3rd May 1992. On the first trip, I cabbed an OL49 and hitched a ride to the station. On the second, I was able to get haulage behind 4-8-2 Pt47-65 as far as Rakoniewice. The staff on shed were very helpful and friendly and I had a great time on both visits!

PKP OKi27 Class 2-6-0T No.Ty1-76 at Jaworzyna Slaska Museum Depot, 22 November 2017. The OKi27 Class were KPEV (Prussian) Class T12 (DRG Class 74.4) 18 built in 1907-16 by Union and Borsig, were allocated to the newly reconstituted Poland after World War I as reparations then incorporated into the DRB during World War II after which 84 built in 1906-21 went to the PKP. The last was withdrawn in 1971. They had 4'11" driving wheels, 18.6 sq.ft. grate area, 21"x25" cylinders, 171 psi boiler pressure, and weighed 65 tons.

PKP Ty43 Class 2-10-0 No.Ty43-122 at Wolsztyn Depot, 18 November 2017. The Ty43 Class locos were Polish-built DRB Class 42 heavy 'Kreigsloks' (PKP Class Ty3). 126 were built in 1946-49 by Fablok. The last was withdrawn in 2001. They had 4'7" driving wheels, 50.6 sq.ft. grate area, 25"x26" cylinders, 227 psi boiler pressure, and weighed 95 tons. 3 Class Ty3's built in 1944 were renumbered into the Ty43 series.

PKP Class Ol49 2-6-2 No.Ol49-60 without smoke deflectors dumped at Leszno Depot, 20 November 2017. The Ol49 Class were a Polish development of the Russian Class Su 116 were built (Including 4 for North Korea) in 1951-54 by Fablok of Chrzanow. The class introduced a new type of boiler-mounted smoke deflectors peculiar to Poland. PKP TKh2 Class 0-6-0T No.TKh2-12, restored as KPEV No.Breslau 1836 (Union No.534 of 1890) at Jaworzyna Slaska Museum Depot, 23 November 2017. The TKh2 Class were KPEV (Prussian) Class T7 (DRG Class 89.78). 30 built in 1881-92 were allocated to Poland as war reparations after WWI. The last was withdrawn by the PKP in the 1960's. They had 4'5" driving wheels, 17" x 23.5" cylinders, 171 psi boiler pressure, 28 sq. ft grate area and weighed 41 tons. On transfer from the KPEV to Poland, it worked in the Kasimierz Juliusz colliery, Sosnowiec, until well into the 196o's - the last survivor - and in 1974 was restored by the PKP to work on special occasions until 1981. It is the only preserved example of its class.

The Ty45 Class were repeats with detail differences of 37 Class Ty37 locos built by Cegielski in 1937-41 which in turn were updates of the Class Ty23, 612 of which were built by Borsig, Cegielski and Fablok in 1923-33. The Ty23 Class was derived from the Prussian G12 (PKP Class Ty1) Class. The last Ty45 was withdrawn in 2003. They had 4'9" driving wheels, 48 sq.ft. grate area, 25"x27.5" cylinders, 227 psi boiler pressure, and weighed 95 tons.

During 1991 I was lucky enough to be assigned Poland as a Sales Territory by my employer at that time, Philips Scientific, in Cambridge. Travelling around that great country I was able to make two visits to the operational steam locomotive depot at Wolsztyn during 1991 and on Poland's National Day - 3rd May 1992. On the first trip, I cabbed an OL49 and hitched a ride to the station. On the second, I was able to get haulage behind 4-8-2 Pt47-65 as far as Rakoniewice. The staff on shed were very helpful and friendly and I had a great time on both visits!

The Ty23 Class was derived from the Prussian G12 (PKP Class Ty1) Class. 612 of which were built by Borsig, Cokerill, St. Leonard, Franco-Belge, Cegielski, Fablok and Warszawa in 1923-34. On the occupation of Poland in WWII they became DRB Class 58.23. The last was withdrawn in 1980. The Ty23's were derived from the Prussian (KPEV) Class G12 (DRG Class 58.10; PKP Class Ty1) but with only 2 cylinders. Later developments were the 37 Ty37 Class of 1937-40 and the 448 Ty45 Clas of 1946-51. The Class Ty23 had 4'7.5" driving wheels, 48.3 sq.ft. grate area, 25.5"x28" cylinders, 199 psi boiler pressure, and weighed 93.1 tons.

Although the smokebox door shows 'Ol49-99', this is apparently PKP Class Ol49 2-6-2 No.Ol49-23 with later type smoke deflectors dumped at Leszno Depot, 20 November 2017. The Ol49 Class were a Polish development of the Russian Class Su 116 were built (Including 4 for North Korea) in 1951-54 by Fablok of Chrzanow. The class introduced a new type of boiler-mounted smoke deflectors peculiar to Poland. They had 40 sq ft grate, 5'9" driving wheels, 19.6" x 25" cylinders, 227 psi boiler pressure and weighed 82 tons.

Der Polskie Stowarzyszenie Miłośników Kolei (PSMK, Polnischer Verein der Eisenbahnfreunde) hat die Lok vom Technikum Kolejowe Warszawa (Eisenbahn-Technikum Warschau) übernommen, wo sie zu Schulungszwecken mit sichtbaren Kesselrohren ausgestellt war, und sie in seine Fahrzeugsammlung im Museum "Ringlokschuppen Skierniewice" eingereiht. Sie wurde gebaut von den Linke-Hoffmann-Werken in Breslau (Fabrik-Nr. 934) und 1912 an die KPEV (Königlich Preußische Eisenbahn-Verwaltung) abgeliefert.

During 1991 I was lucky enough to be assigned Poland as a Sales Territory by my employer at that time, Philips Scientific, in Cambridge. Travelling around that great country I was able to make two visits to the operational steam locomotive depot at Wolsztyn during 1991 and on Poland's National Day - 3rd May 1992. On the first trip, I cabbed an OL49 and hitched a ride to the station. On the second, I was able to get haulage behind 4-8-2 Pt47-65 as far as Rakoniewice. The staff on shed were very helpful and friendly and I had a great time on both visits!

The Ty42 Class locos were Polish-built DRB Class 52 'Kreigsloks' (PKP Class Ty2). 150 were built in 1945-46 by Fablok and Cegielski. The last was withdrawn in 2003. They had 4'7" driving wheels, 42 sq.ft. grate area, 23.5"x26" cylinders, 227 psi boiler pressure, and weighed 83.6 tons.

The Ty45 Class were repeats with detail differences of 37 Class Ty37 locos built by Cegielski in 1937-41 which in turn were updates of the Class Ty23, 612 of which were built by Borsig, Cegielski and Fablok in 1923-33. The Ty23 Class was derived from the Prussian G12 (PKP Class Ty1) Class. The last Ty45 was withdrawn in 2003. They had 4'9" driving wheels, 48 sq.ft. grate area, 25"x27.5" cylinders, 227 psi boiler pressure, and weighed 95 tons.
