Ein Großteil der flächenmäßig größten Inseln der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika konzentriert sich auf den Alexanderarchipel und die Aleuten im Bundesstaat Alaska sowie die Hawaii-Inseln des Bundesstaates Hawaii. Die Contiguous United States, also die 48 zusammenhängenden Bundesstaaten auf dem amerikanischen Festland, haben – verglichen mit Ländern ähnlicher Größe – eine geringe Anzahl an Inseln aufzuweisen.
Die Verteilung der Inseln in den Vereinigten Staaten hängt hauptsächlich von den geografischen Voraussetzungen ab. So ist die Anzahl der Inseln in Bundesstaaten an der Pazifik- bzw. Atlantikküste sowie an den Großen Seen deutlich höher als im Binnenland.
Gliederung und Inhalt der Listen
Den nach Regionen unterteilten Listen ist eine Tabelle mit allen Inseln der Vereinigten Staaten vorangestellt, die mindestens 300 km² groß sind. Zusätzlich zur Fläche sind auch das Gewässer und – falls vorhanden – die Inselgruppe, in der sich eine Insel befindet, angegeben. Auch die Lage innerhalb eines Bundesstaates oder Außengebiets sowie die Anzahl der Bewohner einer Insel (zum letzten bekannten Census) sind in den Tabellen enthalten. Da sich, mit wenigen Ausnahmen, fast alle der flächenmäßig größten Inseln der USA in den Bundesstaaten Alaska und Hawaii befinden, folgt eine weitere Tabelle mit allen Inseln der Contiguous United States, auch Lower 48 genannt, die eine Fläche von mindestens 100 km² aufweisen.
Regionale Gliederung
Danach folgt eine nach Regionen sortierte Aufstellung der Inseln in den Vereinigten Staaten. Die Listen sind nach Regionen sortiert, in denen Inseln gehäuft vorkommen. Die Abfolge verläuft grob gegen den Uhrzeigersinn, wobei Inseln des Hawaii-Archipels und anderer Überseegebiete an den Schluss gestellt sind.
- Alaska – Inseln des gesamten Bundesstaates Alaska, sowohl an den Küsten des Pazifischen Ozeans, als auch im Beringmeer und dem Arktischen Ozean
- Westküste – Inseln an der Pazifikküste der Bundesstaaten Washington, Oregon und Kalifornien (Alaska ist hier ausgenommen, auch wenn es ebenfalls eine Pazifikküste besitzt)
- Golf von Mexiko – Inseln im Golf von Mexiko, von der Grenze zu Mexiko bis zu den Florida Keys
- Ostküste – Inseln entlang der gesamten Ostküste der Vereinigten Staaten von Florida bis Maine
- Binneninseln – Da sich ein Großteil der Binneninseln der USA im Gebiet der Großen Seen befindet, wird die Liste der Binneninseln in folgende Gebiete unterteilt:
- Große Seen – US-amerikanische Inseln im Gebiet der Großen Seen
- Sonstige Binneninseln - weitere Flussinseln und Binnenseeinseln außerhalb der Großen Seen
- Überseegebiete – Inseln der Außengebiete der Vereinigten Staaten, inkl. Hawaii
Untergrenzen
Da die Größen der Inseln in den verschiedenen Regionen stark variieren, sind die Untergrenzen, d. h. die minimale Fläche einer Insel, die in eine Liste eingefügt wurde, unterschiedlich ausgelegt. Während es in Alaska beispielsweise mehr als 2500 Inseln gibt, von denen einige beachtliche Größen erreichen, sind die Inseln der Großen Seen oder des Golfs von Mexiko flächenmäßig deutlich kleiner. Hier wäre eine einheitliche Untergrenze von beispielsweise 100 km² dementsprechend nicht sinnvoll.
Die größten Inseln
Die folgende Liste umfasst alle Inseln in den Vereinigten Staaten mit einer Fläche von mindestens 300 km².
Größte Inseln der Contiguous United States

Die folgende Liste enthält alle Inseln der Vereinigten Staaten, die in den Contiguous United States liegen und mindestens 100 km² groß sind. Inseln in Alaska, Hawaii, sowie den Inselterritorien sind dementsprechend nicht enthalten.
Alaska
In der folgenden Liste werden alle Inseln des US-Bundesstaates Alaska gelistet, die eine Fläche von mindestens 150 km² aufweisen. Ein Großteil dieser Inseln befindet sich im Alexanderarchipel vor der Südostküste Alaskas sowie innerhalb der bis nach Asien reichenden Inselkette der Aleuten. Auch im Kodiak-Archipel oder der Beringsee sind Inseln beachtlicher Größe zu finden.
Westküste
In folgender Tabelle sind Inseln der amerikanischen Westküste in den Bundesstaaten Washington, Oregon und Kalifornien gelistet. Obwohl auch Alaska eine Westküste am Pazifik besitzt, sind die Inseln dieses Staats in obiger Liste zu finden. Nahezu alle Inseln mit einer Fläche von mindestens 50 km² verteilen sich auf die Kanalinseln vor der Küste Kaliforniens, sowie den Puget Sound und die nördlich davon gelegenen San Juan Islands in Washington.

Golf von Mexiko
Die amerikanischen Inseln im Golf von Mexiko sind flächenmäßig deutlich kleiner als an anderen Küsten, weshalb hier alle Inseln mit einer Fläche von 20 km² oder mehr gelistet sind.

Ostküste
Long Island ist mit Abstand die größte Insel an der amerikanischen Ostküste. Weitere Inseln mit mehr als 40 km² Fläche verteilen sich auf die Sea Islands in Georgia und South Carolina sowie einige vor Neuengland liegende Inseln. Besonders an der südlichen Ostküste handelt es sich dabei größtenteils um Barriereinseln.
Binneninseln
Große Seen
Ein Großteil der Binneninseln der Vereinigten Staaten befindet sich im Gebiet der Großen Seen, fast alle davon im Bundesstaat Michigan. Größere Inseln wie Manitoulin Island liegen jenseits der Grenze zu Kanada. Hier werden alle Inseln ab 50 km² gelistet.

Die folgende Liste enthält alle Inseln der Außengebiete mit einer Fläche von mindestens 40 km².

An aerial view of Orcas Island, one of the islands that make up the San Juan Islands in northern Puget Sound. Its coastline is a mix of sandy and rocky beaches, and shallow and deep harbors which provide habitat for a wide variety of plants and animals.
One of the Expedition 34 crew members aboard the International Space Station recorded this image of much of eastern Galveston Island and Galveston Bay — on the Gulf Coast in Texas.
- The west end of Bolivar Peninsula is visible in the lower left quadrant of the image.
- The island is annually a popular "spring break" spot for students and vacationers from all over.
- Weather-wise, the whole week was pretty much a carbon copy of this clear day, though official Spring-time was more than a week away.

Satellite picture of the island of Hawai'i
- Hawaii, the archipelago’s youngest and largest island, is featured in this low-oblique, north-looking photograph. Apparent are the three main volcanoes that have created the big island—Mauna Loa [13 679 feet (4169 meters)], the easiest to recognize with its rift zone and dark, riblike basalt lava flows that radiate outward from the higher elevations; brownish-looking Mauna Kea, slightly taller at 13 796 feet (4205 meters), but lacking the dramatic appearance of Mauna Loa; and Kilauea near the south-eastern coast. The multiple craters of Kilauea [4078 feet (1243 meters)] are not easily discernible in this photograph. Kilauea and Mauna Loa continue to be two of the world’s most active shield volcanoes as they periodically add new acreage to the big island.

West of British Columbia, Canada, and south of the Yukon Territory, the southeastern coastline of Alaska trails off into the islands of the Alexander Archipelago. The area is rugged and contains many long, U-shaped, glaciated valleys, many of which terminate at tidewater. The Alexander Archipelago is home to Glacier Bay National Park. The large bay that has two forks on its northern end is Glacier Bay itself. The eastern fork is Muir inlet, into which runs the Muir glacier, named for the famous Scottish-born naturalist John Muir. Glacier Bay opens up into the Icy Strait. The large, solid white area to the west is Brady Icefield, which terminates at the southern end in Brady's Glacier.

Flag of the State of Nevada. The flag is described in Nevada Revised Statutes Chapter 235, Sec. 20 as follows: The body of the flag must be of solid cobalt blue. On the field in the upper left quarter thereof must be two sprays of Sagebrush with the stems crossed at the bottom to form a half wreath. Within the sprays must be a five-pointed silver star with one point up. The word “Nevada” must also be inscribed below the star and above the sprays, in a semicircular pattern with the letters spaced apart in equal increments, in the same style of letters as the words “Battle Born.” Above the wreath, and touching the tips thereof, must be a scroll bearing the words “Battle Born.” The scroll and the word “Nevada” must be golden-yellow. The lettering on the scroll must be black-colored sans serif gothic capital letters.

"A silver swath of sunglint surrounds half of the Hawaiian islands in this true-color Terra MODIS image acquired on May 27, 2003. Sunglint reveals turbulence in the surface waters of the Pacific Ocean. If the surface of the water was as smooth as a perfect mirror, we would see the circle of the Sun as a perfect reflection. But because the surface of the water is ruffled with waves, each wave acts like a mirror and the Sun’s reflection gets softened into a broader silver swath, called the sunglint region.
"In this scene, the winds ruffling the water surface around the Hawaiian Islands create varying patterns, leaving some areas calmer than others. Southwest of Hawaii and Maui, on their leeward sides, calmer waters are indicated by brighter silver coloration. Conversely, notice how most of the vegetation on the Hawaiian Islands grows on their northeastern, or windward, sides.
"From lower right to upper left, the “Big Island” (Hawaii), Maui, Kahoolawe, Lanai, Molokai, Oahu, Kauai, and Niihau islands all make up the state of Hawaii, which lies more than 2,000 miles from any other part of the United States."
