Limestone ledges at Lough Carra Lough Carra is just one of many Irish lakes which are underlain by limestone. The water here is so hard that shells and plant stems are quite quickly encrusted with 'lime-scale' (calcite).

Cliff edge At the cliff edge, the soil thins rapidly and exposes the curious linear limestone pavement which gives the appearance of stone railway sleepers laid in the grass. The cliffs here are over 80m high, so this was as close as I was going to the edge. The white pattern on the overhanging bed of rock in the cliff face is caused by a set of parallel faults which cut the across the rock. Sparry calcite has been precipitated in the fault planes, which have subsequently broken and exposed a set of flat, white faces on the grey rock.

Black Rock on the Ballyhoura Mountain Range Black Rock appears on the map as Spot Height 516. It is a very scenic spot on the Ballyhoura Mountain range in the centre of Counties Limerick and Tipperary. When the cloud is high you can see the townlands of Tipperary very well from this spot.
Ballyhoura Mountain range highest peak is Seefin Mountain at 528m.
Walking in this mountain range is very pleasant and great for beginners, beware though - a lot of forestation can throw you off route if you're not careful!Waterford 02
