Hinweise zur Nutzung der Liste
Diese Liste enthält Musiker, Titel und deren Komponist(en), Datum des Eintritts in die Charts, Verweildauer in den Charts und höchste Position (abgekürzt HP). Die Voreinstellung erfolgt alphabetisch nach den Interpreten. Darüber hinaus kann sie nach dem Titel, Charteinstieg, Verweildauer, Position und Label sortiert werden.

Die Liste der Singles in den Billboard-Charts (1950) ist eine vollständige Liste der Songs, die sich im Kalenderjahr 1950 in den von Billboard veröffentlichten Charts der USA platzieren konnten.

Bei der Aufstellung ist zu beachten, dass sich in den Billboard-Charts A- und B-Seite eines Tonträgers auch einzeln platzieren konnten; in diesem Fall werden sie in dieser Liste entsprechend separat aufgeführt. Die Angaben zur Anzahl der Wochen sowie der Bestplatzierung entsprechen dem Zeitrahmen des jeweiligen Kalenderjahres und bilden somit nur eine Teilstatistik ab. In diesem Jahr platzierten sich insgesamt 210 Songs.

In den frühen 1950er-Jahren änderte sich der öffentliche Geschmack; das Publikum wünschte sich die weichere und melodische Musik der Quartett-Gesangsgruppen.[1] In der ersten Hälfte des Jahrzehnts dominierte die Popmusik die Charts. Vom Gesang dominierter klassischer Pop ersetzte Big Band-Swing, der noch in der Phase nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs in die Charts gelangte, auch wenn man häufig Orchester verwendete, um die Sänger zu begleiten. Crooner im Stil der 1940er-Jahr wetteiferten mit einer neuen Generation von Sängern, von denen sich viele auf italienische Canto Bella-Traditionen stützen. Mitch Miller, A&R-Mann beim erfolgreichsten Label der Epoche, Columbia Records, gab den Ton für die Entwicklung der Popmusik bis weit in die Mitte des Jahrzehnts vor. Miller integrierte Country-, Western-, Rhythm & Blues- und Folk-Musik in den musikalischen Mainstream, indem er sie von vielen der größten Künstler seines Labels in einem Stil aufnehmen ließ, der den Pop-Traditionen entsprach.

„Viele Jazzkünstler, die in den 1950er Jahren aktiv waren, werden sagen, dass der Aufstieg des Rock'n'Roll den Tod des Jazz als eine Form der Popmusik markierte“, schrieb Nick Morrison. „Auch wenn diese Beobachtung wahr sein mag, scheint es ebenso wahr zu sein, dass ohne Jazz Rock'n'Roll niemals stattgefunden hätte. Zumindest wäre es nicht so gekommen wie es war. Und das Bindeglied zwischen Jazz und Rock'n'Roll ist der Nachkriegs-Rhythm and Blues von Künstlern wie Louis Jordan, Roy Brown, Wynonie Harris und vielen anderen, von denen die meisten aus der Bigband-Jazz und Swingära stammen“.[2] Songs dieser Ära wie „Ain't That Just Like a Woman“ (Louis Jodran), „Good Rockin' Tonight“ (Roy Brown), „Hop, Skip & Jump“ (Roy Milton), „All She Wants to Do Is Roc“ (Wynonie Harris) und „Hucklebuck“ von Pearl Bailey und Hot Lips Page waren noch vom Jazz beeinflusst, und bereiteten den Weg für den Rock 'n' Roll.
