Irish Book Award

Der Irish Book Award (offiziell An Post Irish Book Awards, bis 2017 Bord Gáis Energy Irish Book Awards) ist ein irischer Literaturpreis, der seit 2006 jährlich im Spätherbst in zahlreichen, gelegentlich auch wechselnden Kategorien verliehen wird. Der Vorgänger war seit 2000 der Irish Novel of the Year Prize. Ausgezeichnet werden dabei mit Ausnahme des Bob Hughes Lifetime Achievement Awards (für das Lebenswerk) neue Werke, die Autoren nur mittelbar. Aufgrund wechselnder Sponsoren für die einzelnen Kategorien können sich deren Benennungen von Jahr zu Jahr ändern.

Die Shortlists werden von irischen Buchhändlern und Bibliothekaren zusammengestellt. Die Irish Literary Academy wählt daraus die Siegertitel in den Kategorien Roman, Sachbuch, Kinderbuch, Jugendbuch, Newcomer, Buch eines irischen Verlags, Sportbuch, Krimi und weitere. Außerdem gibt es je einen Publikumspreis für Unterhaltungsliteratur und für das „Buch des Jahres“, das aus allen Preisträgern ermittelt und jeweils im Januar des Folgejahres bekannt gegeben wird. Weiterhin wird ein Preis für das Lebenswerk vergeben, dessen Träger kurz vor der allgemeinen Preisgala benannt wird.

Im Jahr 2010 wurde einmalig auch ein Preis für das irische Buch des Jahrzehnts verliehen: Skulduggery Pleasant von Derek Landy.[1]
