Douglas Rushkoff

Douglas Rushkoff (* 18. Februar 1961) ist ein US-amerikanischer Autor, Dozent, Kolumnist und Musiker.

Biografie

Rushkoff absolvierte sein Studium magna cum laude an der Princeton University. Er zog nach Los Angeles und erlangte dort einen Abschluss als Master of Fine Arts in Directing am California Institute of the Arts. Heute unterrichtet er Medientheorie im Rahmen des Interactive Telecommunications Program an der New York University.

Seit Mitte der 1990er Jahre hat Rushkoff neben seiner Tätigkeit als Kolumnist zahlreiche Fachbücher und Romane zu Themen der Netzkultur, Open Source und zur Cyberpunk-Bewegung vorgelegt, von denen mindestens Cyberia, Playing the Future („Chaos Kids“) und Ecstasy Club („Virtuality Club“) auch auf deutsch erschienen sind. Er gilt als einer der Protagonisten der Cyberpunk-Bewegung und war als solcher als Berater für die United Nations Commission on World Culture und die Sony Corporation tätig.

Im Spätjahr 2003 war Rushkoff außerdem kurzzeitig Keyboarder bei Psychic TV.

Im 2022 veröffentlichten Survival of the Richest fasst er den privaten Austausch mit fünf anonymen Milliardären zusammen und erörtert deren Selbstschutz angesichts sozialer Krisen und Klimakatastrophe. Darin kritisiert er die Technikgläubigkeit einiger von ihnen und attestiert, das keiner von ihnen ein Interesse an der Abwendung bevorstehender Verwerfungen habe.^[1]
