Charles Wood, 2. Viscount Halifax
Charles Wood, 1. Viscount Halifax (* 7. Januar 1839 in London; † 19. Januar 1934 Hickleton Hall bei Doncaster, West Riding of Yorkshire) war ein britischer Peer und Politiker.
Leben
Er war der älteste überlebende Sohn des Charles Wood, 1. Viscount Halifax, aus dessen Ehe mit Lady Mary Grey, Tochter des Charles Grey, 2. Earl Grey.
Er besuchte das Eton College und schloss 1865 sein Studium am Christ Church College der Universität Oxford als Master of Arts ab. Von 1862 bis 1877 hatte er das Hofamt des Groom of the Bedchamber für Albert Edward, Prince of Wales inne.
Er gehörte der ökumenischen Bewegung an und war von 1866 bis 1920 und von 1927 bis 1934 Präsident der English Church Union, die sich für eine Annäherung zwischen Römisch-katholischer Kirche und Church of England bemühte. Er diente als Offizier der 1st West Riding Yorkshire Yeomanry Cavalry und erreichte dort den Rang eines Captain. 1880 wurde er als Fellow in die Society of Antiquaries aufgenommen.
Beim Tod seines Vaters erbte er 1885 dessen Adelstitel als 2. Viscount Halifax und 4. Baronet, of Barnsley, und wurde dadurch Mitglied des House of Lords. Zeitweise hatte er auch das Amt eines Deputy Lieutenant des West Riding of Yorkshire inne.
Ehe und Nachkommen
1869 heiratete er Lady Agnes Elizabeth Courtenay († 1919), Tochter des William Courtenay, 11. Earl of Devon. Mit ihr hatte er sechs Kinder.

Als er 1934 im Alter von 95 Jahren starb, erbte sein jüngster Sohn Edward seine Adelstitel.

Arms of The Rt Hon Charles Lindley Wood, 2nd Viscount Halifax of Monk Bretton in the West Riding of the county of Yorkshire, the son of The Rt. Hon. Charles Wood, 1st Viscount Halifax, GCB, PC, and his descendants.
Arms— Azure, three naked savages ambulant in fesse proper, in the dexter hand of each a shield argent, charged with a cross gules in the sinister a club resting on the shoulder also proper, on a canton ermine, three lozenges conjoined in fesse sable, and upon an escutcheon of pretence the arms of Courtenay, namely, quarterly, 1 and 4, or, three torteaux surmounted by a label of three points azure (for Courtenay) ; 2 and 3, or, a lion rampant azure (for Redvers). Above the escutcheon, which is charged with his badge of Ulster as a Baronet, is placed the coronet of his rank, and thereupon a helmet befitting his degree, with a Mantling azure and argent; and for his Crest, upon a wreath of the colours, a savage as in the arms the shield charged with a griffin's head erased argent.
Supporters—On either side a griffin sable, gorged with a collar, and pendent therefrom a portcullis or. Motto—“I like my choice.”
Charles married April 22, 1869, Lady Agnes Elizabeth (d. 1919), only daughter of The Rt Hon William Reginald Courtenay, eleventh Earl of Devon and his wife, Lady Elizabeth Coutenay née Fortescue, The Countess of Devon; and has had Issue—(1) The Hon Charles Reginald Lindley Wood (17 July 1870 –6 September 1899), (2) The Hon Alexandra Mary Elizabeth Wood (25 August 1871 –10 March 1965), (3) The Hon Francis Hugh Lindley Wood (21 September 1873 –17 March 1889), (4) The Hon Mary Agnes Emily Wood (25 March 1877 –25 March 1962), (5) The Hon Henry Paul Lindley Wood (25 January 1879 –6 June 1886), (6) The Rt Hon Edward Frederick Lindley Wood, 3rd Viscount Halifax and 1st Earl of Halifax (16 April 1881 –23 Dec 1959)Title: Viscount Halifax Abstract/medium: 1 negative : glass ; 5 x 7 in. or smaller.
