Charles Anthon

Charles Anthon (* 19. November 1797 in New York City, New York; † 29. Juli 1867) war ein US-amerikanischer Klassischer Philologe.

Leben

George Christian Anthon war ein deutscher Arzt, der während der Amerikanischen Revolution bis zur Niederlage in Detroit von 1788 diente. Er erreichte den Rang eines Generalarztes, heiratete die Tochter eines französischen Offiziers und ließ sich in New York City nieder.

Sein Sohn Charles begann nach einem Abschluss 1815 am Columbia College ein Studium der Rechtswissenschaft und wurde 1819 als Anwalt zugelassen, praktizierte jedoch nie. 1820 wurde er an seinem alten College zum Assistant Professor für Griechisch und Lateinisch ernannt, zehn Jahre später zum ordentlichen Professor. Zur gleichen Zeit war er Headmaster der grammar school, die damals zu seinem College gehörte, der Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School, eine Stellung, die er bis 1864 innehatte.

Anthon war auch in eine Echtheitsdiskussion in Bezug auf ein Fragment von Joseph Smiths Übersetzung des Book of Mormon verwickelt, die unter dem Begriff Anthon Transcript bekannt geworden ist.

Zu seinen gesellschaftlichen Freunden zählte auch Edgar Allan Poe.

Werk

Anthon produzierte für den Gebrauch in Schule und College eine große Zahl von kommentierten Schulausgaben lateinischer und griechischer Autoren sowie Lehr- und Nachschlagewerke, die lange in Gebrauch blieben, obwohl sie bei Schullehrern wegen ihrer zahlreichen Hilfen weniger Gefallen fanden. Ein Beispiel ist A Manual of Greek Literature from the Earliest Authentic Periods to the Close of Byzantine Era, ein Werk, das alle griechischen Autoren in diesem Zeitraum samt Kurzbiographie und Bibliographie verzeichnete.

Anthons Werk wurde von seinem Nachfolger Henry Drisler (1818–1897) fortgesetzt.
