Braj Basi Lal

Braj Basi Lal (häufig B. B. Lal; Hindiब्रज बासी लाल Braj Bāsī Lāl; * 2. Mai 1921 in Jhansi) ist ein indischer Archäologe.

Der Staatsminister für Kultur (IC) und Umwelt, Wald und Klimawandel, Dr. Mahesh Sharma, veröffentlichte das Buch der ehemaligen GD ASI, Prof. B. B. Lal, anlässlich des Gründungstages des Nationalmuseums in Neu-Delhi.

Leben

Lal studierte Sanskrit mit einem First-Class-Abschluss an der University of Allahabad. Nach dem Studium entwickelte Lal Interesse an der Archäologie und 1943 wurde er Praktikant unter dem britischen Archäologen Mortimer Wheeler, mit dem er in Taxila, Harappa und Sisupalgarh arbeitete.

Zwischen 1950 und 1952 führte er archäologische Untersuchungen der Mahabharata-Stätten durch, darunter Hastinapura, der Hauptstadt der Kurus. Er entdeckte viele Painted-Grey-Ware-Standorte.[1]

Er war von 1968 bis 1972 Generaldirektor des Archaeological Survey of India, danach war er Direktor des Indian Institute of Advanced Studies in Shimla.[2]

1975–1976 arbeitete Lal an dem Projekt Archäologie der Ramayana-Standorte, währenddessen Ausgrabungen an fünf Orten, die im Ramayana genannt werden, durchgeführt wurden – in Ayodhya, Bharadwaj Ashram, Nandigram, Chitrakoot und Shringaverapur. Dabei wurde auch die Entdeckung von Tempel-Säulen unmittelbar südlich der Babri-Moschee in Ayodhya gemacht.[1][3]

Im Jahr 2000 wurde Lal mit dem Orden Padma Bhushan ausgezeichnet.[2] 2021 erhielt er den zweithöchsten indischen Zivilorden Padma Vibhushan.[4]
