Die AirTanker Services Limited (im Markenauftritt AirTanker) ist eine britische Charterfluggesellschaft mit Sitz und Basis in Carterton, West Oxfordshire auf der Luftwaffenbasis RAF Brize Norton.
Überblick
Im Jahr 2008 unterzeichnete das Verteidigungsministerium des Vereinigten Königreichs den Vertrag über das Konzept des Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft (FSTA) mit AirTanker, um der Royal Air Force (RAF) ein Lufttransport- und Luft-Luft-Betankungskontingent bereitzustellen. AirTanker unterstützt die Royal Air Force nicht nur, sondern besitzt auch eine Betriebsgenehmigung des Typs A des Vereinigten Königreichs für Zivilluftfahrt, die es erlaubt, Passagiere, Fracht und Post in Flugzeugen mit 20 oder mehr Sitzen zu befördern.[1] Die Airbus Voyager (englische Bezeichnung für die Airbus A330-MRTT) der RAF sind im Besitz von AirTanker. AirTanker Services Limited stellte ihre Airbus Voyager erstmals an der RIAT 2016 in England der Öffentlichkeit vor.
Nach der Erteilung einer Betriebslizenz flog die Fluggesellschaft im Januar 2013 ihren ersten Charterflug nach RAF Akrotiri auf Zypern für das britische Verteidigungsministerium.[1] Nach Verzögerungen bei der Zertifizierung fand am 20. Mai 2013 der erste Betankungsflug statt.[2]
Dienstleistungen
Im Auftrag der Royal Air Force und des MoD
AirTanker Services führt Luftbetankungs-, Transport- und Passagierflüge durch. Charterflüge werden mit Reserveflugzeugen durchführt. Die Fluggesellschaft bietet auch zweimal wöchentlich Flüge von RAF Brize Norton nach RAF Mount Pleasant auf den Falklandinseln an, hauptsächlich für militärisches Personal, obwohl auch zahlende Passagiere mitreisen dürfen. Zwischenstopp zum Betanken dieses Fluges war zunächst der Amílcar-Cabral-Flughafen auf der Insel Sal, wobei aufgrund der Einschränkungen durch die Corona-Pandemie zwischenzeitlich auf Dakar ausgewichen wurde. Seit 2023 wird schließlich wieder auf dem Wideawake Airfield im britischen Überseegebiet Ascension Island gelandet, nachdem dort die Renovierung der Start- und Landebahn abgeschlossen war.[3]
Im Auftrag ziviler Fluggesellschaften
Ab Mai 2015 wurde ein Flugzeug an Thomas Cook Airlines verleast, um es auf Urlaubsrouten einzusetzen. Der Vertrag hatte zunächst eine Laufzeit von drei Jahren und umfasste hauptsächlich Langstreckenflüge von Glasgow, Manchester und London-Stansted. Der erste kommerzieller Flug fand am 1. Mai 2015 von Manchester nach Cancún und Punta Cana statt.[4]
Seit 2017 ist die britischen Ferienfluggesellschaft Jet2.com Leasing-Kunde von AirTanker während der Hauptreisezeit. ZZ341 und ZZ342 sind derzeit (August 2024) mit ziviler Registrierung im Einsatz. Dafür wurden die militärischen Zusatzausrüstungen vorübergehend entfernt, eine Jet2-Kabinenausstattung mit höherer Anzahl Sitzplätzen (327) eingebaut und eine weiße Lackierung mit entsprechenden Logos angebracht.[5]
Zwischenzeitlich waren auch Condor[6] und Eurowings[7] Kunden von AirTanker.
Flotte

Mit Stand August 2024 besteht die Flotte der AirTanker-Services aus 14 Flugzeugen vom Typ Airbus A330-MRTT.[8][9] Die Flugzeuge, die von der RAF genutzt bzw. im Auftrag der RAF betrieben werden, haben standardmäßig 291 Premium-Economy-Sitzplätze[10] in einer 2+4+2-Bestuhlung mit 34 Zoll Sitzabstand. ZZ336 Vespina hat 100 Economy-Sitzplätze und zusätzlich 58 Business-Class-Sitzplätze vom Typ Vantage XL des britischen Herstellers Thompson Aero für Regierungsvertreter und Mitglieder der königlichen Familie (siehe Bild)[11].

Pictured is the interior of the RAF Voyager that has been converted to provide travel for the Royal Family and Government Ministers whilst continuing to perform air-to-air refuelling in support of RAF and allied aircraft, is now ready to enter service.The Voyager which is based on the Airbus A330, transported the Prime Minister, Foreign Secretary, and the Defence Secretary to the NATO Summit in Warsaw on 8 July 2016.The revamp was announced as part of the 2015 Strategic Defence and Security Review with the aim of providing a better value for money way of transporting Ministers rather than the current use of charter aircraft.The transformation of the aircraft consisted of fitting 58 business seats to make it capable of its new role and offer a cost effective, secure and flexible transport solution.The new seating will allow it to transport sizeable business delegations of the type the Prime Minister has successfully led to India and China, as part of the Government’s work to create jobs and support economic growth.The aircraft will also be available for the Royal family for official overseas visits undertaken at the request of the Government.Using this aircraft will be significantly cheaper than using chartered flights, while also leaving the aircraft capable of continuing to fulfil its primary operational role of air-to-air refuelling tasks.The aircraft will be based at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire alongside the rest of the RAF Voyager fleet. It can fly from and to almost any airport across the world that can take an Airbus A330, and its range will allow it to reach much of the world without costly and time-consuming refuelling.The RAF Voyager is based on the modern Airbus A330-200 passenger aircraft and, in conjunction with our Boeing C-17A Globemaster III fleet, provides the RAF with Strategic Air Transport and Aeromedical capability. In addition, Voyager is an extremely effective Air-to-Air Refuelling asset, which is utilised to enable a variety of RAF aircraft to operate for extended periods.

The aircraft were taking part in an airborne delivery training sortie that saw them drop two different loads, ranging in weight from 100 kilograms to a tonne, over RAF Abingdon, Oxfordshire.
After completing that part of the sortie, they then linked up to a Voyager to complete some low-light air to air refuelling over the West Coast of England.
The Hercules is the RAF’s primary tactical transport aircraft and in its current C.Mk 4 and C.Mk 5 versions of the C-130J-30 and C-130J, respectively, has been the backbone of UK operational tactical mobility tasks since it was brought into service in 1999.
It is frequently employed to operate into countries or regions where there is a threat to aircraft; its performance, tactics and defensive systems make it the ideal platform for such tasks.
The aircraft is highly flexible, with the ability to airdrop a variety of stores and paratroopers and operate from natural surface landing zones. To conduct these missions, it is vital that Hercules crews are highly skilled in low-level flying.
The aircraft performs in the same roles at night using night-vision goggles (NVGs), while station keeping equipment (SKE) enables it to remain in formation during poor weather.
Long-range capabilities are enhanced with air-to-air refuelling, while the Air Survival Rescue Apparatus may be mounted in the cabin for search and rescue missions, enabling the Hercules to airdrop life rafts and emergency supplies.
