Aethelbald charter Cyneberht 736.jpg

A charter of Aethelbald's to Cyneberht, 736. The first charter of undoubted authenticity to include an incarnation year (description in anglo-saxons.net). British Library MS Cotton Augustus ii.

English Transcription:

I, Æthelbalt, the lord king, by the gift of not only Marcersium but also of all the provinces which are called by the general name of Sutangli, for the remedy of my soul and the relaxation of my penances, give to my venerable count Cyniberht, that is, to build a monastery in the province which the ancients gave the name of Husmera, near the river called Stur, with all the necessary things pertaining to it, with the fields and forests and fisheries and meadows, into ecclesiastical possession, by benevolent gift. So that as long as he lives he may have the power to hold and possess it to whomever he wishes, either while he is alive or certainly after his death, to bequeath it. Now the aforesaid field is in the vicinity on both sides of the aforesaid river, having on the north side a forest which they call cynibre, but on the west another which is called moerheb. The greater part of which belongs to the aforesaid field. But if anyone tries to violate this donation, let him know that he will give a terrible account to God in the terrible examination of his tyranny and presumption. Now this charter was written in the year from the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ, seven hundred and thirty. 6th indiction, fourth. + I, Æthelbalt, king of Britain, have signed, confirming my own donation. + I, Bishop Uuor, have consented and signed. + I, Bishop Uilfrid, have signed by order of King Æthelbald. + I, Æthelric, sub-regent and count of the most glorious prince Æthelbald, have consented and signed to this donation. + I, Ibe, as if unworthy abbot, have consented and signed. + I, Heardberht, brother and duke of the aforesaid king, have consented and signed. + I, Ebbella, agreeing to my consent, have signed. + I, Count Onoc, have signed. + I, Oba, have consented and signed. + I Sigibed consented and subscribed. + I Bercol consented and subscribed. + I Ealduuft consented and subscribed. + I Cusa consented and subscribed. + I Pede consented and subscribed.

Now there is a field in the aforementioned forest of Moreb, called Brochyl, which I, Edilbalt, king of the Sutanglors, faithful leader and companion of my wife Cyniberht, have given in ecclesiastical rights, along with the aforementioned field.
