Beschreibung:
Core buildings of the Abbey of Elchingen. This abbey was one of the 40-odd abbeys of the Holy Roman Empire - out of well over one thousand abbeys and monasteries - that enjoyed the status of an Imperial Abbey.
The territory of the abbey extended well beyond the monastery as such and included dozens of villages and thousands of subjects. As the other imperial abbots, the Abbot of Elchingen was an absolute ruler who had "seat and voice" at the Imperial Diet.
Cropped from a postcard from the 1920s or 1930s.
