ChulalongkornChulalongkorn oder Rama V., der Große, war von 1868 bis zu seinem Tod König von Siam, dem heutigen Thailand. Während seiner 42-jährigen Regierungszeit öffnete sich Siam weiter dem Westen, modernisierte sein Militär, Verwaltungssystem, Bildungs- und Rechtswesen, baute die Infrastruktur aus und schaffte die Leibeigenschaft ab. Im Jahre 1873 schaffte er auch die bis dahin übliche Niederwerfung auf den Boden vor Angehörigen des Königshauses ab, sie mussten sich als Zeichen des Respekts nur noch verbeugen.
