During the early years of the twentieth century, Houston gained economic maturity with a rapid rise in bank deposits, the full development of its railroads and ship channel, the discovery of nearby oil fields, and a municipal government supportive of progressive and civic growth. The burgeoning growth of City National Bank, represented by the construction of a new building in 1947, reflects the economic prosperity of post-War Houston. The bank played an important role in the stimulation of that economy. The City National Bank building is most strongly associated with Judge James A. Elkins', the bank's president, role in Houston banking. Elkins' exceptional significance in the development of high finance in Houston makes its period of significance extend to 1956 to encompass the full length of occupation of the building by the City National Bank. A formidable influence upon the post-war skyline of Houston and a representation of Alfred Finn's later skyscraper design, the building is in the National Register of Historic Places in the area of architecture of local significance.

Noted Houston business and civic leader Will C. Hogg (1875-1930) had this commercial structure built in 1921. Early tenants included the Armor Auto Company and the Great Southern Life Insurance Company. The art deco building, designed by the engineering firm of Barglebaugh and Whitson, features an exterior dominated by industrial windows. A rooftop penthouse, used for offices of the Hogg family businesses, reflects Mediterranean influences.
Will Hogg was the son of "Big Jim" Hogg, Governor of Texas.
On the roof of the building, hidden behind the parapet, is an 18-room penthouse and solarium. The penthouse housed the personal offices of the Hogg family, with extensive roof gardens.

This building was designed by the firm that designed New York's Grand Central Station. It's one of the few buildings of the era left in downtown (as of 2020), and the only train station. "Between 7,000 and 10,000 visitors filled the building on March 1, 1911. A representative of the Pennsylvania Railroad stated that no city in the nation the size of Houston had anything to compare with the new terminal. The Herb and Lewis orchestra played as guests swarmed through the flower-decked building to be greeted by Harvey House waitresses in their black dresses and heavily starched white aprons. There appeared to be uniform agreement that this "fine up-to-date station makes a splendid impression upon the stranger who arrives in the city for his first visit. Both of Houston's major newspapers noted the opening as an example of the boom in construction. On March 2, the city also dedicated the new County Court House, and a new Post Office would be opened in April. The Municipal Auditorium was nearing completion; the sixteen-story Carter Building was to be dedicated soon; a twelve-story bank was under construction; and over $2,000,000 in navigation and road projects were underway. To many people, Union Station symbolized the destiny of Houston. Today it's part of the Astros Ball Park and houses the team store

Founded in 1874 to facilitate trade in the expanding cotton market. This Victorian renaissance revival edifice, designed by Eugene T. Heiner, was built in 1884-85 by contractors Max Kosse and James S. Lucas. The exchange room and galleries were situated on the second and third floors, and the first floor contained offices and the exclusive "Houston Club." The basement housed a plush saloon. The structure was remodeled and the fourth floor added in 1907. The exchange vacated the premises in 1924. The building was restored in 1973.

Houston's oldest fire house, this building was designed by Olle J. Lorehn and was completed in January 1899 and opened the next year as the first paid station in Houston. The two-story brick structure features rusticated stone details, a five-bay front with central arched entry flanked by two apparatus bay entries, and unique parapet details. Houston National Bank began as Fox Bank in 1876 and went through several name changes until 1926, when Humble Oil founder Ross S. Sterling bought the bank. Two years after purchasing the bank, Sterling commissioned the firm of his son-in-law, Hedrick and Gottleib, to design the bank’s new building. Hedrick may have been Sterling’s son-in-law, but the firm of Hedrick and Gottleib was the successor to early Texas skyscraper pioneers Saguinet & Staats.
This was to be the last of the new banks on Main Street as in 1929 the Depression hit.
The interior of this building, now an Islamic center closed to the public, is said to be one of the most elegant bank interiors in Houston. A five-story rotunda, at a height of 56 feet, is supported by eight columns. The floor is a pattern of Roman travertine and Belgian marbles. A marble stairway, in the center of the rotunda, leads to the mezzanine. A bronze fresco surrounds the domed ceiling. The walls are covered with Sienna marble paneling and bronze chandeliers hang throughout.Autor/Urheber: Ed Uthman, Houston, Texas, USA, Lizenz: CC BY 3.0

Prominent real estate developer, publisher, statesman and banker Jesse H. Jones opened the Gulf Building in 1929 with Gulf Oil, National Bank of Commerce, and Sakowitz Brothers as primary tenants. Alfred C. Finn designed the 430foot high Art Deco edifice with a six-story base topped by a tall tower that diminishes in size as it rises. The 37-floor, steel-frame structure remained Houston’s tallest skyscraper for 34 years. In 1986, the building, then owned by a successor bank, underwent a $50 million restoration. It was renamed the JPMorgan Chase Building in 2000 and continues to be a monument to the city’s growth, modernity and financial prosperity. This building is in the National Register of Historic Places

Lumber, oil, and ranching tycoon James Marion West (1871-1941) and his wife, Jessie Dudley (1871-1953), hired eminent Houston architect Joseph Finger to design this 17,000-square foot house as headquarters for their 30,000-acre ranch. Harris County Courthouse — in Houston, Harris County, Texas.
- This site has served as the courthouse square for Harris (Originally Harrisburg) County since the completion of the first county courthouse, a two-story frame structure, in April 1838. Later courthouses were constructed on this site in 1851, 1860 and 1884. The present structure, which was built in 1909-1910, served as the fifth Harris County Courthouse at this location.
- It was designed in 1909 by Charles Erwin Barglebaugh, an associate in the prominent Dallas architectural firm of Lang and Winchell. The building features a Neoclassical style design. Outstanding details include the domed roof, ornate central projections, or risalits, with Corinthian columns, and elaborate ornamentation of terra cotta, limestone and masonry. Building materials include pink Texas granite and light brown St. Louis brick. During construction of the courthouse, county offices were housed in a nearby theater.
- Shortly after a new criminal courthouse and jail facility was built east of the square in 1952, this structure was remodeled and used as the Harris County Civil Courts Building. Beginning in 2009, the county restored the exterior and interior public spaces to their original 1910 appearances. Now in its second century serving the citizens of Harris County, the 1910 courthouse is a dramatic example civic architecture and a symbol of Harris County's dynamic growth in the early part of the twentieth century.
- The Harris County Civil Courts Building is in the National Register of Historic Places in Houston, Texas.

Platted 1836 by surveyors Gail Borden, Jr., and Moses Lapham as "Congress Square." It was intention of city fathers Augustus C. and John K. Allen to have permanent Capitol of Republic of Texas located here. However, this was never realized and almost immediately it became center of commerce for the flourishing city.
Residents, farmers, peddlers and Indians all crowded here daily with wagon loads of goods to trade. Soon merchants were vying for permanent sites for stores. One early observer noted "reason for its popularity was that the municipal government was conducted in Kesler's Arcade, a saloon only a half block away."
In 1840 Houston's first municipal market house was built here. Before it was completed, city officials voted to enlarge it and include a city hall also. For 30 years building served dual role-- the market overflowing till it reached the streets. Many items, including household and farm goods, were sold here.
It was here that Houston Independent Light Guard mobilized after Texas decided to invade Mexico, 1842.
Several municipal buildings occupied the site following original market-city hall. However, the seat of city government was eventually moved to a new location and this became a park.
This location is in the National Register of Historic Places

The James L. Autry House is on Courtlandt Place, in Houston. Courtlandt Place is a small gated community comprised of a single one block long private street near Downtown Houston. It was originally created for and populated by Houston's elite. A total of 18 mansion-like homes line the two sides of the street. Virtually every home has a historical marker and eleven of the 18 homes are on the National Register of Historic Places. Mississippi native James L. Autry moved to Corsicana in 1876. There he studied law and held civic offices at the time of the first oil discoveries in Texas. He was chief counsel for the Texas Co. (later Texaco) and a pioneer in the new field of petroleum law. Autry commissioned Sanguinet and Staats to design this home, which was constructed in 1912. The Neoclassical design features a double balustraded gallery and large fluted Doric columns. Also prominent are a porte-cochère (right), fernery (sunroom), and a hipped Lodovico tile roof. The rear garage has upstairs servants quarters.

This three-story apartment building was constructed in 1922 to help ease a housing shortage in Houston. It was built and owned by Robert C. Duff, a prominent Texas railroad man and banker before the Great Depression. The building features bracketed eaves and a tile roof and exhibits influences of the arts and crafts and prairie school periods in architectural styling. The Sheridan is one of Houston's few remaining "flats" from the 1920s and 1930s.

Irish native John Kennedy (1819-78) came to Houston in 1842. A baker, he operated a store at other locations in the city before commissioning the construction of this building about 1860 for a steam bakery. Kennedy later established other operations and became a leading businessman of Houston. One of the oldest structures in the city on its original site, the two-story brick building remained in the Kennedy family until 1970.

The eight-story building is covered almost entirely in terra cotta. A 1983 renovation removed the Kress signage and other architectural features of its retail past, but the building retains the character of a 1913 skyscraper, one of several built in downtown Houston at the time. This S. H. Kress & Co. building was one of the largest the company built, and one of the few to incorporate professional offices.
This outpost of the S.H. Kress & Co. five-and-dime, sitting at what was once the head of Houston’s primary retail district, was designed by Kress staff architect Seymour Burrell in 1913. The building was renovated as the St. Germain Lofts.
Although Houston’s second Kress store followed the general pattern of the chain at the time, it was still unusual. The typical Kress store contained room enough for retail space and offices on the upper floors. The Houston location was eight stories – enough room for retail on the first 3½ floors, Kress’s offices above, and four floors of office space for lease. The store had two facades, one facing Main, the other facing Capitol.
Like most early high-rises, this building emphasized its verticality, with a two-story base, a five-story shaft, and a single story crown. The reinforced concrete frame is sheathed in terra cotta, scored to simulate stone. Kress stores always had colorful ornamentation, and this store was no exception.River Oaks Garden Club Forum of Civics, formerly the John Smith County School - Upper Kirby

Pillot Building (1990 replica) — at 1006 Congress Ave., in Houston, Texas
- The original building at this location, owned by French-born merchant and Houston civic leader Eugene Pillot (1820-1896), was a cast iron columned brick structure, and was built between 1857 and 1869. Owned by Pillot heirs until 1944. Early tenants of the original building included: attorneys, real estate brokers, and a dry goods merchant. Subsequently a hotel, a barbershop, restaurants, and bars occupied the building. Original building listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
- The structure suffered severe damage in the 1980s and collapsed in 1988. A replica, incorporating some of the original cast iron columns, sills, and lintels, was completed in 1990. Replica removed from the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.

The 1928-29 Texas Slate Hotel, one of Houston's early twentieth century skyscrapers, is an example of the Spanish Plateresque style made popular through a major city planning effort that was never fully adopted. The building was designed as the "San Jacinto Hotel" by noted Houston architect Joseph Finger for the Miller Investment Company, but was purchased before completion by prominent businessman and philanthropist Jesse H. Jones. When Jesse Jones purchased the hotel in January of 1929 and although the exterior was complete, the rooms had never been furnished and it is assumed the hotel never opened. The hotel opened as the 'Texas State Hotel" in the spring of 1929. The building is in the National Register of Historic Places with its significance as an important example of the early twentieth century Spanish Plateresque revival style of architecture and as a work of architect Joseph Finger. Serves as the Club Quarters Hotel today (2020)
